Glenwood Springs to join in 'creative industries' project Post Independent, February 8, 2011 Glenwood Springs City Council has agreed in principle to join with
neighboring Carbondale in a project to cultivate the arts and other "creative industries" as a form of local economic development. Randi
Lowenthal, director of the non-profit Roaring Fork Business Resource
Center, is proposing to head up the pilot project with $20,000 each from
the two municipalities. She will also be applying for a $10,000
Colorado Creative Industries Council grant to assist with the project.(Read full story here)

Town invests $20,000 in 'economic gardening' Sopris Sun, January 27, 2011 As Carbondale Mayor Stacey Bernot describes it, the town's $20,000 contribution to an economic development strategy called "economic gardening" just makes sense. "It seemed like an endeavor worth embarking on," she said. "It helps reinforce our strengths. It helps us build a model that can be applicable to other industries, and quite frankly I feel like there is a real pull on this board [of town trustees] to do something along the lines of economic development." Combine all of that with the fact that the strategy would involve a partnership between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, and Bernot asserts, "It's just worth doing." (Read more here)
'Economic gardening': Project aims to cultivate artistic commerce Post Independent, January 26, 2011 The city of Glenwood Springs may partner with Carbondale on a unique approach to economic development aimed at growing existing local businesses rather than recruiting new businesses to move in. Initially the effort would be oriented toward the arts, including traditional fine arts, music, theater and film, and artistic trades such as architecture, graphic design, interior design, wood working and clothing design. Called "economic gardening," the pilot project being proposed by Randi Lowenthal of the Roaring Fork Business Resource Center would establish what's called a "creative industries cluster."
